Illustrator Michael White visits JME

On Thursday, November 15, 2012, Illustrator Michael White visited Joseph Martin Elementary School and showed off his art work with our students. He also showed the students how to draw different pictures. They absolutely loved trying to draw like him. This was a fun filled event enjoyed by all.

Our Kindergarten AR Sock Hop party! The kiddos really seemed to enjoy themselves and had fun dancing and eating coke floats! It was definitely a fun time had by all! Thank you to Ms. Walker for all of your hard work for putting on such a neat event. Kiddos keep reading and taking AR tests so that you can attend the next AR Party. It is sure to be a hit.

Ft. Stewart Animal Exhibit at JME

On Wednesday, November 07, 2012, we had visitors from Ft. Stewart come to JME and speak with our Kindergarten friends. They brought a baby aligator, a corn snake, a turtle, an aligator head, a snake skin, and a butterfly exhibit. The students had the opportunity to hold the turtle, pet the snake and aligator, and ask any questions that they had. The students really enjoyed themselves and had a great time interacting with the Ft. Stewart crew. It was a lot of fun seeing the huge smiles on each student's face and hearing them continuously mentioning how much fun they had. What was your favorite part? Leave me a comment and let me know! Joseph Martin Elementary Election 2012

For the past week we have talked about the election and how important it is for adults to exercise their freedom to vote. We discussed the election and the impact it would have on the students future. Here at JME we have held our own election. We allowed the students to vote for Duck or Farmer Brown for President.Each student received a voting ballot and was able to cast their vote for who they thought would be the better president at JME. The students made campaign posters and we displayed them in the hallway for others to see and try to persuade others to vote for their candidate. At 1:00 pm today, the votes were tallied and the winner was announced to the student body. The new president of JME is Farmer Brown. CONGRATS TO FARMER BROWN! American Symbol- The Statue of Liberty

We are continuing with our Reading Unit on American Symbols. One of the symbols that we discussed was the Statue of Liberty. We read an informational text on the Statue of Liberty, watched a video clip, made a KWLI chart (What we know, what we want to know, what we have learned, and illustrations) on the Statue and even made our own crowns. The students had a blast making their crowns and wearing them around the school and pretending that they were the Statue of Liberty.

 - we know that the statue is green
 - we know that the statue is in New York
 - we know that the statue is big

W: What we want to know
   - why is the torch always burning?
   - what does the word Liberty mean?
   - why does she wear a crown?
   - how long did it take to build the statue?
   - what is she standing on?

L: What we have learned
  - the statue stands for freedom and the word liberty means freedom
  - that she was a gift to the USA from France on America's 100th birthday
  - that the statue has broken chains at her feet and that symbolizes that the people are now free
  - that the statue is as tall as sky scrappers (tall buildings)
  - that the statue is made of copper
  - the statue stands on a pedestal
  - there are 25 windows in the crown
  - the 7 points on the crown stand for the 7 continents

McTeacher Night

Wow! It was a lot of fun to see so many parents, students, and teachers come out for the JME McTeacher Night at McDonalds. I had a fun time working holding the sign by the road waving at passing cars and visiting with the JME family. Did you get to come to the JME McTeacher night? If so leave me a comment to let me know what time did you come, who did you see, what did you eat, or who did you come with to McDonalds. I would love to hear from you. McDonalds,"we're loving it", for supporting our school by donating 20% of the proceeds raised from 5pm-8pm to our school. Thanks for your support! It was a huge success.
